Chapter 21

Andrew had little to say for himself as he took Elizabeth home. He had borrowed Bingley’s curricle for the trip, and appeared unusually preoccupied by the business of driving the horses. His countenance was more thoughtful than angry, though, so the silence was not too uncomfortable.

He seemed in better spirits the next morning when he and Georgiana stopped by Longbourn to say their farewells. She had felt a little trepidation that he might have, on reflection, been angry at her initiative, but when he took her aside for a private adieu, he said, “I should thank you for what you did yesterday. You were right to insist that I read that letter. It has given me a great deal to think about.”

“I am glad. I have been a little worried for Georgiana, since she seemed quite upset.”

He glanced back at his sister. “She is better now. I expect we will have some long talks on the journey home.”

He kissed her hand before he left, but it did not send a tingle up her arm as Darcy’s every touch could do. “I will see you in December, then.” They had resolved that he would come to Longbourn for Christmas, with the wedding to follow afterwards.

She waved as they drove away. Perhaps now her life could return to normal for a little while, and she could learn to accept her future with Andrew. How odd it was that only two months ago she had not even known of his existence! And she had thought she would never see Darcy again. Now she could not even be free of him in her most private thoughts.

Mary came up beside her. “Will you miss him very much?” she asked.

Elizabeth smiled at her. “It will seem strange not to be tripping over members of the Darcy family right and left, but I think I shall manage.”
